Praying Together When It Feels Awkward

"Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven."

— Matthew 18:19 (ESV)

✦ DEVOTIONAL ✦

For many couples, the idea of praying together is simultaneously compelling and deeply uncomfortable. There is something uniquely vulnerable about prayer — it is an act of honesty before God, and doing it with your spouse means allowing them to witness that honesty too. That kind of spiritual nakedness can feel more exposing than any physical intimacy.

And yet, couples who pray together consistently report deeper emotional connection, greater peace during conflict, and a stronger sense of shared purpose. Prayer creates a space where both spouses approach God together — as equals, as fellow children of the Father — and something shifts in that place. The posture of prayer humbles us, and humility is the soil in which love grows.

If prayer feels awkward, start small. Hold hands and pray one sentence each. Thank God for something specific in your spouse. Ask Him for what you need that week. You do not need eloquent words — you need honest ones. God is not impressed by performance; He is moved by sincerity.

The goal is not perfection in prayer but connection in prayer. Let it be messy. Let it be brief. Let it be real. What matters is that you go before God together, and in doing so, you build a spiritual foundation that nothing can shake.

✦ PERSONAL REFLECTION ✦

What has kept you from praying together more consistently? Is it busyness, vulnerability, a sense of spiritual inequality, or something else? What would one simple prayer look like for you as a couple this week?

✦ COUPLE'S PRAYER ✦

Father, we come to You together — awkward as it may feel. We don't have all the words, but we have each other and we have You. Teach us to pray as a couple. Break down the walls of vulnerability that keep us from this sacred practice. Let our prayers become the thread that holds us together in every season. Amen.

✦ CONVERSATION STARTERS ✦

◆  What makes praying together feel intimidating — or natural — for you?

◆  How can we create a prayer rhythm that feels genuine and sustainable for both of us?
